Summary:
• In some applications, A-Glass reinforcement mat products may not be a direct replacement for E-Glass mat products.
(30% greater compressed thickness versus E-Glass)
Field tests have proven that A-Glass reinforcements used as a ‘bulker-core’ in pultruded laminates does not compromise designed mechanical properties. [ control or reduce material cost by using lighter mat weights]

• Electrical conductivity and overall strength properties of laminates molded with combinations of A-Glass and E-Glass mats demonstrated no significant differences versus 100% E-Glass mat laminates.
• Mats can be stitched to fabrics; improving surface or interlaminar shear

There are many product variations available to help you engineer optimum performance and cost effective products.

COMPARISON OF GLASS SURFACING MATS FOR REINFORCED PLASTICS

ABSTRACT
Surmat® continuous fiberglass filament surfacing mats are widely used to impart superior surface characteristics to a variety of glass
reinforced matched metal die molded parts. They have not gained wide utilization for chemical-resistant process equipment, however,
because of NBS Voluntary Product Standard PS-15-69. The appendix of this standard, which covers Custom Contact-Molded Reinforced Polyester Chemical-Resistant Process Equipment states that "the 10-mil surfacing mat shall be made from chemical-resistant glass
(Type C or equal)." Since Surmat is made from Type A glass many manufacturers are reluctant to use it without evidence of its equality to C-glass. Following the development of their series "100" binder, the manufacturers of Surmat selected Bjorksten Research Laboratories, Inc. (BRL) to compare the performance of laminates made from C-glass to those made from Surmat 100. The laminates were subjected to twenty different chemical reagents at room temperature for periods of 30, 90, 180 and 360 days. Following each exposure period, the samples were inspected and tested in accordance with the guidelines set forth in PS-15-69 and ASTM Method C-581. As a result of these tests it was concluded that there is no significant difference in the performance of the laminates with either C-glass or Surmat 100. Because much of the processing where a chemical-resistant apparatus is utilized is performed at elevated temperatures, BRL was also asked to evaluate laminates made from C-glass and Surmat 100 after exposure to chemical reagents at 200 °F. The reagents selected for this study were 25% sulfuric acid, 5% sodium hydroxide, 25% sodium hydroxide, 5-1/4% sodium hypochlorite and saturated sodium chloride. The laminates were evaluated after 30 and 90 days using the same guidelines as the room temperature studies. Once again it was concluded that there was no significant difference in the performance of the laminates using either type of surfacing mat.

INTRODUCTION
Surmat® is a continuous fiberglass filament surfacing mat manufactured by Superior Fibers L.L.C. Since its introduction in
1973, the material has enjoyed widespread utilization for imparting superior surface characteristics to a variety of fiberglass reinforced,
matched metal die molded, parts. Soon after its introduction, however, it became apparent that the material was not destined to
achieve the desired utilization by manufacturers of chemicalresistant apparatus. The primary reason for their inability to gain a significant share of this market is the National Bureau of Standard Voluntary Product Standard PS-15-69. This standard, which is adhered to by all of the major FRP manufacturers, states that "the 10-mil surfacing mat •Bjorksten Research Laboratories, Inc. P.O. Box 9444 Madison, Wisconsin 53715 Therefore, a second series of experiments was conducted comparing laminates surfaced with Surmat 100 and C-glass in contact with the following materials at 200 °F. 25% Sulfuric acid 5% Sodium hydroxide 25% Sodium hydroxide 5-1/4% Sodium hypochlorite Saturated sodium chloride The standard laminates for these experiments were prepared using the same procedures as in the previous tests. This time, however, particular care was exercised in choosing the resin-catalyst system to insure that the laminates would stand up under the proposed conditions. A specially designed apparatus was constructed to maintain the reagents at the necessary temperature. The circulating oil bath is thermostatically controlled at 200°F and the reagent containers (glass for the sulfuric acid, sodium hypochlorite and sodium chloride solutions and the stainless steel for the sodium hydroxide solutions) are equipped with water-cooled condensers to eliminate concentration changes due to evaporation. After a thorough inspection, the coupons were placed in the heated reagent solutions and remained totally immersed throughout the test. The sodium hypochlorite solution again being replaced with fresh material every 48 hours. When 30 days had elapsed, one Surmat 100 and one C-glass surfaced sample were removed from each reagent, rinsed, inspected and tested. Barcol hardness and flexural strength retention values for these samples are shown in shall be made of chemical-resistant glass (Type C or equal)." Since Surmat is made from Type A glass many manufacturers are reluctant
to use it without evidence of its equality to C-glass.

CHEMICAL RESISTANCE TESTING
Following the development of their series "100" binder, the manufacturers of Surmat® selected Bjorksten Research Laboratories, Inc. to compare the performance of laminates made from C-glass to those made from Surmat 100. Using PS-15-69 and ASTM Method C-581 as guidelines, twenty reagents were selected for use in comparing chemical resistance. The materials chosen were.

15% Hydrochloric acid
25% Sulfuric acid
25% Acetic acid
5% Aluminum potassium sulfate
10% Sodium carbonate
95% Ethanol
Toluene
Perchloroethylene
n-Heptane
5% Hydrogen peroxide
5% Nitric acid
15% Phosphoric acid
5% Sodium hydroxide
Saturated sodium chloride
Methyl ethyl ketone
Ethyl acetate
Kerosene
Monochlorobenzene
Distilled water
5-1/4% Sodium hypochlorite

Standard Surmat 100 and Cglass surfaced laminates were prepared in accordance with the procedures set forth in C-581. After etermining that the glass contents were within the specifications, eighty-four standard 4" x 5" coupons were cut from each, with four of the coupons being used as controls. The samples were notched for identification, visually inspected and immersed in glass jars filled with the aforementioned reagents and solutions. As is generally known, PS 15-69 is primarily intended for the evaluation of resins. Unfortunately, however, the resin which was selected for these tests was not specifically formulated for use in chemical resistant applications and ultimately proved to have very poor resistance to some of the reagents chosen. As a result, some of the coupons were almost totally destroyed within the course of the test and thus did not contribute to the overall evaluation. During the test, the samples were maintained in a totally immersed state at room temperature. The sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide and distilled water being replaced with fresh material every 48 hours. At the end of 30 days, one Surmat 100 surfaced laminate and one C-glass surfaced laminate were removed from each of the 20 reagents and solutions, rinsed with water and blotted dry. The coupons were inspected and changes which resulted from the immersion were noted and recorded. Barcol hardness measurements were taken and then the coupons were cut into three 1" x 4" sections and the flexural strength determined in accordance with ASTM Method D-790. Values were compared to control samples which had not been subjected to immersion. The results of the 30 day immersion tests appear in Figure 1. The same procedures were repeated after 90, 180 and 360 days and the results of these tests appear in Figures 2, 3 and 4. From these results it is concluded that there is no significant consistent difference between the performance of the laminates surfaced with Surmat 100 and those surfaced with C-glass.

ELEVATED TEMPERATURE TESTS
While this information enabled Superior Fibers to attain somewhat broader acceptance for Surmat®, two shortcomings of these tests soon became apparent. First, as a result of the poor resin performance, little or no information was obtained concerning performance in contact with some of the reagents and solutions which were of greatest interest to many potential users. Second, because much of the processing where chemical-resistant apparatus is utilized is conducted at elevated temperatures, our data, which was obtained at room temperature, is not necessarily applicable. The remaining samples were subjected to attack for a total of 90 days before being tested. The results of these final series of tests appear in Figure 7. After inspection of each sample and reviewing the results of the tests conducted after both 30 and 90 days, it was again concluded that there was no appreciable difference in the performance of the two surfacing materials.

CONCLUSION
The tests described above strongly suggest the equivalency of Surmat® 100 to C-glass under a wide variety of chemical environments.
It is hoped that the information presented will be useful to those who are considering alternative surfacing products. MICHAEL J. MALONEY
